hahaha I kinda relate to your situation.. But in my case, I have to work really hard and getting pne full time work and 2 part-time work just to cover all the bills. In so many years, It has become part of me already. The key is just to manage your time and be a great role model to everyone who look up to you.

Wow that is a long week, even for the kids. Thats really cool that you get to teach a language in a different countrie. I would love to do that. The downside to that is that I'm a kid and I just can't fly off to another country and teach Englislh. Well maybe when I get older I can do something that would take place in another country!

Not that I can recall the title specifically, but have you read a book or heard anything about a book called something like, "How Christians are killing Christianity"? It's basically about the big (basically) PR crisis the faith is facing in the US today. I haven't read it, but it looked like it could either be interesting or wholly offensive.

Even though it drives me up the wall, there's something really awesome about being a part of a child's after school activities. I enjoyed teaching, but I always feel a little more in touch with the kids at after school, like instead of just teaching them classroom stuff I'm helping them learn how to live life, too!

Its all about chasing shadows.
By that I mean latching on to this or that latest,
most innovative idea that some self styled money making
guru has put out in the hope it’ll go viral and make them
a lot of money off the backs of all the headless chickens
who will follow them blindly down a blind alley. Its a shame
but a truism nonetheless that people will follow where someone
they see as an expert leads. Even if they lead them to certain
disaster, which is what most of the gurus tend to do to their flocks.
The trick is to recognize a shadow when you see it!

Alex, I came to the memorial service, but couldn't stay for the reception because my wife got sick and we had to go home.
Sorry to have missed you. We've been suppoters of the YAV program since our daughter served in Brazil. She is now a Montessori teacher and loves it, but her work in Brazil will always be an important part of her life.
Your grandpa was an inspiration to me and to many others.

Hi Alex,

I must have missed earlier references to your blog -- this is the first time I have come across it. Anastasia included a link to the blog in the UPC newsletter. It is really interesting to read back through your entries and find out more about your experiences.

Your discussion and the comments about The Irrisistible Revolution book are most interesting. I'll echo Lou's comment about Rod and Patti Radle. When you are next in SA you should make it a point to visit with them. They are amazing in the way they have lived out the Gospel in their life decisions, very much in the manner of Shane Claiborne's experience.

In your September 3 entry you mentioned another YAD showing Mexican immigrant children in LA a map of Mississipi and that it seemed like a foreigh country to them. The children I have mentored here in SA (2nd and 3rd generation in the US) typically know nothing beyond their very narrow part of town. We upper middle class people who have traveled and who have family and friends all over the country take for granted that everyone is at least as aware as we are of the states in the US. It has been a learning experience for me.

I'll start following your blog now and look forward to reading about your experiences with/in another part of society.

Alex, while you were in San Antonio, did you ever meet Patti and Rod Radle who run Inner City Development? They have lived a similar philosophy - living poor and serving - for 40 years in the westside of San Antonio. They have alternated - one working for a salary some years then trading with the other. They have raised 4 children, all of whom are educated. One is currently studying at the Vatican while contemplating the priesthood. She recently served 2 terms on the SA City Council.

I speak that way unconsciously as well, but sometimes people point it out to me or I just catch myself. PATH is compiling all the information into a database to present a report to the Baldwin Hills city council. Then they'll decide if they want to give us a contract to regularly do homeless outreach in their neighborhood.

and Meg, I'm not sure where we get our socks from... I think our donations come from individuals, churches, other orgs etc, but I don't know. There are about 80,000 homeless in the LA area though, and I think everybody is running pretty thin these days.

I'm sure you've heard of this, but there are a lot of organizations out there now that work to donate socks to homeless folks-- perhaps if your funding is running low, you could look in to working with them to provide socks for the bags you hand out?
